A-Z Vol. 1 (Released 19th April 2010) marks the halfway point in Ash’s groundbreaking 26 single campaign the A-Z Series. Wrapping up singles A to M alongside a host of bonus material, the compilation illustrates Ash’s rejuvenated creative zeal.

Currently back in their Manhattan HQ recording tracks which will complete the second half of the series, Ash have been spurred on by the unique challenge of a singles only future. The scrutiny of each track being drip-fed to fans, juxtaposed by freedom from the traditional 2-year album cycle, has fostered a new Ash era of diverse, imaginative pop.

While the rock electro hybrids True Love 1980 and Space Shot have broken through to the airwaves, the consistent quality of the series is backed up by the varied and original song writing on the tracks in between. The 3-minute gem Ichiban, the expansive dynamic rock of Joy Kicks Darkness, the classic Wheeler love song Tracers and the atmospheric tale of humanity lost Pripyat are amongst the bands responses to the creative everest that is a 26 single campaign.

As for the Japanese exclusives... for now they really do have to stay Japanese exclusive due to contract reasons. That's not to say that at some point down the line that we won't be able to release them outside that territory.

Excellent. I'm one of those luddites who prefers to physically OWN music, and this saves me compiling my own CD-R of the songs, and it'll be great to have official packaging rather than having to print my own off. That said, I think Return of White Rabbit should definitely be the final track, not the opening - it works brilliantly as a climax.

Thanks to dmh for the explanation, should help put the naysayers at ease. I haven't hopped on the vinyl train and haven't left CDs yet, even though I don't really listen to actual CDs - I open the package, rip them in high quality to iPod, and enjoy the artwork. Takes up space, sure, but I guess I still have that collector mentality. Plus it's good to have the CD as back-up in case my iPod or PC (where I keep the subscription downloads) crashes and can't be recovered. Ash have got pretty much all the bases covered on this.

I'm not around here very often but logging in and seeing people moaning about a "cd" which is only a compilation cd of their work so far is annoying. It was always said that this would happen so what's the problem? I for one love the fact that i will have a hard copy of the cd.... i don't know why but i just like physically owning something plus it'll be great for in the car. SO STOP WHINGEING YA MUPPETS!!! Oh, i may be being a wee bit simple but i'm an A-Z subscriber (I have been from the start) but i haven't got the bonus tracks yet. Have i missed the bus?

For fuck sake stop whinging. Ash said all along way back at the start that they would do physical release of the singles so I don't know what some of you are moaning about. We've had a new single every fortnight for a few months plus three freebies and two tours in the space of about 8 months. Pretty damn good if you ask me. All this cd is gonna do is give those who like a nicely presented physical copy what they want and reach out to those who haven't picked up on the subscription thing so far or those who just don't like downloads. Get over yourselves.

The fact that the "new" bonus tracks will be available separately to download is the key for me - I might buy the CDs as well as my subscription (not sure yet, but probably will but wouldn't like it if I "had to" buy the CDs to get the extra bonus tracks.

Just so that everyone knows, the bonus tracks on the Vol. 1 compilation will be available as a digital bundle, at a very reasonable price, for those subscribers who want them without having to re-buy the same songs again on the CD. The subscription + bonus tracks will work out cheaper than the price of the combined A-Z CD volume.

Some people, like me, prefer digital downloads for their convenience and portability. I can't remember the last time I bought a CD. I'm glad I don't have to have shelves full of CD's or have to go looking for particular discs when I want to hear something. I sound like an Apple salesman but iPods / iPhones are some of the greatest inventions of the last decade.

Still others much prefer to have something physical that they can hold and really feel that they own rather than 1's & 0's on their hard drives. CD's offer the best sound quality and affordable format for the masses.

Our vinyls are strictly limited collectors items and are something we really wanted to do as we've always demanded our singles are released on 7". Even when previous labels didn't want to release them we forced their hand. The box when complete is worth it's price, it's a very sexy piece.

We always said we were going to do A-Z compilations. Those who feel duped / ripped off can get off their soapboxes, my heart bleeds for you... We're just past the 1/3 mark of the A-Z and the bonus tracks are only just starting to trickle out to subscribers. We've publicized the sheer quantity of tracks that have been recorded. These are all going to get used. This has been the most prolific writing / recording period of our career and we love the diversity of the output. We're under no illusions that not everyone's going to like every song / direction but hopefully we'll cover all bases by the series' end.

If at the end of the A-Z anyone still feels that they didn't get value for money. They can really go fuck themselves.

why are some people moaning about this?!? if you dont like it, dont fucking buy it!!! simple. no one's forcing you. i'm a subscriber but i'll deffo be buying this when it comes out. it'll be nice to have an actual cd version with artwork instead of the mp3's. the bonus tracks and dvd are an added bonus. even if they werent included i'd still buy the album.. 1. to add to my collection, and 2. i'd wanna support my fave band. what you gotta understand is that there's shitloads of ash fans that havent subscribed for whatever reason (if they did then the songs would be much higher in the charts), so releasing the songs onto cd makes sense and will bring in new fans. it's not like they're ripping anyone off or whatever

I subscribed to the digital/ vinyl bundle which is all good but now a bonus of a physical anthology (not an album) will save me money otherwise spent on CD-R's burning a fresh playlist every fortnight to listen to in the car. Keep up the great work guys!!!

PS if I could have afforded the singles I would have got then AND the volume 1 as well. The singles are a great collectors piece but this will be better for day to day playing in yr car so I dont think it's a cop out at all. Something for everyone. Well done guys. Love you loads.

as much as I want it, but wouldn't it be a cop out to the idea of "no more albums"? yes it's not an album per se, but it's still one CD with lots of tracks on it that people will listen front to back as an entity.

plus had this been the intention from the start? we've been invested in the idea that the A-Z singles is a groundbreaking new music distribution method, and the band really put their faith in the idea. so having getting people excited on it for months and then go "well, actually, we'll compile them on one CD anyway.." is kind of a letdown

from the business side it's understandably a no-brainer, and might bring them more exposure etc etc. and i know most digital subscribers want something solid on their hands as well. still it feels like they're double-dipping on us.

i'll be happier with a boxset of singles collection

Couldn't afford subscribing on vinyl, so this works out nicely for me in terms of having these songs in physical form. Definitely getting the CD/DVD. Good lord, how many bonus tracks do they have up their sleeves?
